Knitwear - Invisable Mending.

Have you ever had a favourite woolly jumper that you just couldn't bear to part with, even though it may have seen better days? Instead of throwing it out or hiding it away in the back of your drawers to gather dust, why not consider invisible mending? Creating invisible mends is easily achievable for knitwear especially. It’s the perfect solution in the case of ladders, moths holes and fraying cuffs. By using the remaining threads of wool and a trusty ‘latch tool’ we can re knit the fabric for you and create an invisible mend. With over 9 years experience, mending knitwear is one our specialities and something we love working on!

Below I’m going to go into a wee bit of detail about the benefits of choosing mending with a specific focus on knits and all the things I personally love about the practise of repair - a sustainable, more ethical alternative to throwing away clothes that still have plenty of life left in them!

Knitwear if looked after correctly is designed to last a lifetime. However, sometimes your knits may require a bit of TLC along the way to make sure of this! Mending extends the lifespan of your garment. Although larger holes can be mended I would always recommend addressing holes when they first appear, that way you have more chances of achieving a completely invisible mend. It's important to remember that invisible mending is a form of repair, not an alteration. However, alterations i.e size alteration are also possible on knitted garments.

A huge benefit of knitwear invisible mending is in the name - it is practically invisible, contrary to other garment mending techniques. See the example below!

Personally, my favourite projects are those where I get to revive knitted jumpers and sweaters that have sentimental value for people. From talking to many people over the years I’ve found that a lot of the clothing we don’t wear due to damage but continue to hold onto are the pieces that hold special memories for us. I have many items like these in my own wardrobe that I've repaired myself and now get to enjoy them on the daily which I love! Not only is mending cheaper, but it allows me preserve memories and make more in my favourite clothes (usually big wooly jumpers…)

Affordable, ethical, and better for the environment - what more could you want? Invisible mending is a more sustainable alternative to throwing away clothes that still have plenty of life left in them. The fashion industry produces millions of tons of clothing every year, most of which ends up in landfills as waste. By repairing our clothes instead of buying new ones, we can help solve this problem while giving fresh life to clothes!
